Why Was the United States Different?

The United States was not the only Western Hemisphere nation to permit slavery, and it was not the only one to abolish it. The United States was, however, the only Nation that fought a civil war that was caused, at least in part, by the issue of slavery, and in which over 600,000 people died. Why was the United States different in this respect?
