How accurate is the mafia myth of Italy?

We hear all sorts of stories of mafia and godfather of Italy. And how they can get away with their crime by accompanying corruption? (As depicted in the book and film godfather and other films.) Is this really a myth or the country is congenial for ensuring human rights? Also about the Amanda Kercher trial, the americans were blaming the judicial system of Italy. I really want to know about the human rights situation and whether that country is liveable or not.
